Cideries

From the Great Lakes to Lake Simcoe and Rice Lake, Southern Ontario’s abundant bodies of water create a microclimate ideal for producing apples, with over 15 varieties grown. And when nature gives us apples, we make cider. Over 60 local cideries across Ontario are transforming fresh, delicious apples (and other fruit) into flavourful and creative craft ciders, from clear to cloudy and sweet to tart.

Visit a craft cidery to tour the orchards, taste the flavours and discover why cider is making such a splash in Ontario.

Quick guide to craft cideries in Ontario

Best time to visit a cidery

The crisp, refreshing nature of cider lends itself well as a spring and summer beverage. In fact, the Ontario Craft Cider Association appointed June as the (un)official month to celebrate cider. During spring, take a tour of a cidery orchard to enjoy the bursts of cheerful apple blossoms.

Types of cider

Traditionally made from apples, ciders can range from sweet to dry, and from fresh, non-alcoholic beverages to alcoholic hard ciders. And because it’s made from fruit, all cider is gluten free.

In Ontario, discover ciders infused with other fruit like raspberry, currents, citrus or cranberry, or create blends with maple, lavender and even rhubarb. Another twist to the classic cider is Perry – made with pears instead of apple.
