Interesting facts about Union Station

Union Station’s history began in 1914, when construction started despite a materials shortage during World War I. When the station officially opened in 1927, it was the largest of the great urban train stations built in the early 20th century.

In 1975, Union Station became a National Historic Site as a classic example of a Beaux-Arts railway station. This style’s primary traits include a symmetrical design, a flat roof, arched windows and intricate ornamentation. The station was designed by Ross and Macdonald, one of Canada’s most famous architecture firms of the time.
