Georgian Rail Trail

The popular 34-kilometre multi-use Georgian Rail Trail follows the shores of Georgian Bay between Collingwood and the villages of Thornbury and Meaford. Highlights include waterfront parks, beaches, escarpment views, shops, craft breweries and wineries.

For a longer ride, consider branching off from the trail to explore the Beaver Valley’s bakeries on the Thornbury Sticky Bun Loop and Apple Pie Trail.

Georgian Trail E-Bikes has multiple locations for e-bike rentals in the area. For bicycle rentals and repairs, head to Hill’s Bike Shop in the former Hill’s Dairy in Meaford.

Old Railway Bike Trail, Algonquin Park

Algonquin Adventure Tours offers daily three-hour guided mountain bike tours along the park’s Old Railway Bike Trail from May to October. Learn about the natural and cultural history of Algonquin Park while keeping an eye out for wildlife, including moose, foxes, bald eagles, black bears, beavers and turtles.

Tours are led by a seasoned park guide and include bike rental, cycling instruction, free tour photos and a gourmet picnic meal from Algonquin's landmark Henrietta’s Pine Bakery.

Great Lakes Waterfront Trail Adventure

Madawaska’s Lumberjack Gravel Tour

Departing from Calabogie, the three-day Lumberjack Gravel Tour travels on quiet gravel roads originally used by the lumber industry, traversing the beautiful Madawaska and Bonnechere valleys. Optional stops include microbreweries, a natural cider distillery, local cafes, caves, waterfalls and artisan shops.

Choose to complete the loop as a series of day trips or overnight along the way in Airbnb accommodations, tenting on farm properties, or camping on crown land. Burk’s Falls is a little-known gem of a small town packed with art, food and fascinating backroad cycling day trips. There are several road riding loops to choose from. Warm up on the 21-kilometre Katrine Mini Loop or head out for the day on the scenic Sand Lake Loop (63 kilometres) or popular AIM Triangle (63 kilometres).

Manitoulin Island

Manitoulin Island is emerging as a world-renowned cycling destination for its blend of scenic pastoral landscapes, Lake Huron beaches and quaint, friendly atmosphere.

Manitoulin Island Cycling Advocates provides maps and 14 self-guided cycle tour itineraries. The organization also offers guided, vehicle-supported tours, including a five-day Alvar Cycle Tour with accommodation and a two-day Manitoulin Passage Ride that includes mechanical support and picnic lunches. There are five tour dates to choose from, and e-bike rentals are available.

Pelee Island

Book a ferry to visit Canada’s southernmost point—peaceful Pelee Island. There are few cars on the island, so the cycling is as serene as it gets.

Cycle the main road around the island’s perimeter to experience idyllic vineyards, farms, beaches, parks and forests. Choose from short 9-kilometre, medium 20-kilometre or longer 30-kilometre self-guided tours.

Even better, plan two days and stay overnight at a campground or in a tranquil island B&B or inn. The Pelee Shop rents all styles of bikes and provides bike maps and route suggestions.

St. Joseph Island

Just 45 minutes east of Sault Ste. Marie, picturesque waterfront scenery and low-traffic coastal roads make St. Joseph Island one of the region’s most popular cycling destinations.

Suggested routes include the self-guided 70-kilometre pedal around the island’s perimeter and the out-and-back ride to Shoal Island Lighthouse near Richards Landing. Backroads crisscross the island, allowing for alternate loops or hill challenges with sweeping views.
