Once a thriving uranium mining town, the city of Elliot Lake is now a comfortable and cozy community with opportunities for discovery and adventure in every season.

With a famously long snowmobiling season, as well as downhill and cross-country skiing, winter heats up. In the summer, explore lakes and rivers by kayak or canoe, trails for ATV tours and hiking or camping at nearby provincial parks and conservation areas.

Where is Elliot Lake?

The small city of Elliot Lake is located within the Algoma District in Northern Ontario, just north of the shores of Lake Huron. The city is about a two and a half hour’s drive east of the city of Sault Ste. Marie along Provincial Highway 108.

Elliot Lake and its surrounding region are best explored by car or motorcycle, with limited public transit options provided by Ontario Northland Bus Service.

Things to do in Elliot Lake

Go snowmobiling

The winter season brings around one of the more popular things to do in Elliot Lake, snowmobiling. The surrounding region offers more than 270 kilometres of groomed trails to explore. 

Explore the backcountry

Book a night or two at the Dunlop Lake Lodge and relax on your way to Blind River Provincial Park where you’ll find opportunities for backcountry camping, hiking, canoeing and fishing.

Visit a beach

Elliot Lake offers two city beaches that are walkable from the town centre: Spruce Beach and Spine Beach. Find sand, picnic areas and barbecues—everything you need for a beach day.

Hike in a wildlife sanctuary

Hike around the marshes at the Sherriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. Several trails offer great views of water lilies and keep an eye out for wildlife.

Tee up for a game of golf

Book a tee time and play a round at Stone Ridge Golf Course, just a few minutes’ drive outside of Elliot Lake.This picturesque course also offers a restaurant on-site after the game.

Hit the slopes

Skiers and snowboarders will find one of North America’s best vertical inclines at local favourite Mount Dufour Ski Area.
