Thunder Bay

Known as one of Canada's greatest “outdoor cities,” Thunder Bay is also a culturally diverse city with exciting shopping, sightseeing and entertainment. The city takes its name from the bay at the head of Lake Superior and is considered the sunniest city in eastern Canada.

Visitors to the city are welcomed with unique historical attractions, museums, accommodations, cultural events and great cuisine. Near by parks and wilderness offer easy access to hiking, fishing and other outdoor pursuits.

Where is Thunder Bay?

Thunder Bay was created by amalgamating the cities of Fort William and Port Arthur. It’s located along the northwest shoreline of Lake Superior and connected to neighbouring northern cities via the Trans-Canada Highway.

Thunder Bay is about a 15-hour drive from Toronto along the Trans-Canada/ON-17 Highway. You can also take the Ontario Northland bus or fly to the Thunder Bay International Airport.

Explore local cuisine

Explore the waterfront

Well known for its culture, the Port Arthur neighbourhood features a scenic waterfront development called Prince Arthur's Landing, with dozens of shops, restaurants and bars.

See a beautiful island

Sail to Porphyry Island, which boasts unique geology and flora such as devil’s club and arctic plant species. It is also home to the second Canadian lighthouse built on Lake Superior. Join Sail Superior for more water-based excursions to Thompson Island, Caribou Island, Otter Cove and the Slates.

Take a lakeside stroll

Located on the shore of Lake Superior, Marina Park has a boardwalk, walking paths, a maritime museum and the historic CN Rail Station, with gift shops and an ice cream parlour.

Take advantage of the numerous parks near Thunder Bay, including the famous Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and the high waterfalls in Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park.

Fort William Historical Park is the largest living history attraction in North America. View recreations of the fur trade from 200 years ago through tours and educational exhibits.
