Largely rural in character, Norfolk County is sometimes referred to as “Ontario’s Garden for its abundance of farmland, vineyards, cideries, horticultural gardens and farm markets.

Thanks to its spot on the north shore of Lake Erie, Norfolk County also offers several beaches with boating, kayaking, fishing and other water-based activities.

Birders also flock to Norfolk County. In particular, to Big Creek National Wildlife Area, where over 200 bird species can be viewed as they make their annual migrations.

Where is Norfolk County?

Norfolk County is roughly a 1.5 hours’ drive from Niagara Falls and just under two hours from the Greater Toronto Area. The region is best explored by car or motorcycle.

Visitors arriving from the U.S. can cross through Windsor on the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or Ambassador Bridge, or through Niagara Falls via the Rainbow Bridge or Peace Bridge. The closest airports are Toronto Pearson and the Niagara Falls Airport.

Spread out over eight hectares, Whistling Gardens offers North America’s largest peony and conifer collections, along with computer-run fountain shows. Open from May to October.

Visit a farm market

Shop seasonal produce, locally made ciders, meats and baked goods at the Cider Keg Farm Market. The market also offers seasonal experiences like a haunted corn maze and fire-cooked dinners.

Enjoy a day of bird watching

Big Creek National Wildlife Area, a marshland along the Lake Erie coast is a hotspot for birding. Bring the binoculars and keep your eyes peeled for more than 200 bird species.
